About the Club

The purpose of the Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Savannah, shall be to support the Americana Merchant Marine—to aid in the development of needed river and harbor improvements, and to encourage and promote local shipping, maritime, educational, and port-related industries and activities.

The Propeller Club United States – Port of Savannah is comprised of over 250+ individuals representing more than 145 organizations in the Savannah maritime community.

The Propeller Club was conceived in 1922 and organized in 1923 in New York, New York. On November 7th, 1927, the Propeller Club of the United States was formed, with individual member clubs designated as “Ports.” The Port of Savannah, Port No. 23, was organized in February 1933.

The membership comprises a cross section of the marine, maritime, and associated industries throughout the United States and in many cities overseas. “Propeller” in the name refers to the propulsion of ships, and is symbolic of the driving force of the nation’s heavily-maritime-reliant economy.

The membership of the Port of Savannah counts individuals from the following types of organizations as members:

Admiralty Law Firms

Educators

Federal, State, and Local Government Agencies

Harbor and River Pilots

Maritime-related Service Providers

Maritime Towing Companies

Motor Carriers

Each month, we gather for luncheons featuring a guest speaker. Annual events include the State of the Port Address co-sponsored by the Georgia Ports Authority, a winter oyster roast, National Maritime Day and Week functions in May, and sending of delegates to the Propeller Club national convention.

We also provide assistance by awarding annual scholarships to students in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation programs and to other college students from the area studying to obtain a degree and seek a career in the Maritime Industry. Check Membership-Scholarships for information and applications.
